THE LIGHTS WENT up in the movie theater, and Mel sighed in relief. She stood and retrieved her coat as her date that evening did the same. What had she thought would happen when she’d agreed to see the same movie she’d seen with Jack only days earlier? She’d thought that Brendan seemed nice, and he had been eager to see the superhero film. She had enjoyed the movie the first time around and figured she’d like seeing it again.

If only her date had restrained himself from narrating the entire story to her. Or eating all the popcorn.

“That was something, wasn’t it?” Brendan asked as they placed their empty drinks and popcorn bucket into the trash can at the front of the theater before exiting. “I can’t wait until the next one comes out.”

“Me either.”

“We should plan on seeing it together then.”

Mel turned to peer at him. “Do you always plan things so far in advance?”

“Sure do. I’m a planner by nature. Even planned my own kindergarten graduation. Got off to an early start. What about you, Melissa?”

She turned back to look at him, stepping out of the way of another couple who walked past. “Um, I do like to be organized, especially with my shop, but I’m not a huge planner.”

He gave a shrug. “And yet, we seemed to click through email. Pretty cool, huh?”

This guy was nice, but talk about no chemistry. Unfortunately, she had no interest in pursuing anything with him. “So, are you thinking what I’m thinking?”

Mel racked her brain. What had they been talking about besides the movie? “About?”

“I know that June is traditional for weddings, but I’ve always been partial to the spring. Say late April or early May? What do you think, Melissa?”

Was he really starting to plan their wedding? “I think we should discuss a second date before there’s any discussion regarding wedding plans.”

He gave a shrug. “Of course, but I want to get a jump start. Places book up pretty fast around here. You can never start too early, is what I say.”

“Listen here, Brandon—”

“It’s Brendan.”

“And I’m Melanie, not Melissa.” She took a few more steps back from him and smiled. “You seem like a good guy and all, but this isn’t really working for me. I’d rather us plan on not going on another date. Sorry.”

He shrugged and smiled back. “I get it. I’ve got a whole week of other dates planned. Good luck, Melissa.”

She was about to correct him again, but she just shook her head and walked on. The crisp night air would hopefully help her to clear her head.

It wasn’t until she got home that she could find the humor in the situation. He’d wanted to start planning the wedding on the first date? She sent Jack a quick text to let him know she’d made it home okay.

Any sparks?

Mel winced at the thought of that. None. Although he tried to plan the next forty years of my life.

What?

She squelched her smile at Jack’s confusion. I’m fine.
